Gamer Vision

I liked the work of Aled Lewis, particularly how he had made it appear as though the game characters were actually present in the environment, and I decided to attempt something similar. However, there were some key differences between Lewis' work and my own. I noticed that in Lewis' photographs, there was a lot of colour, with high-saturation shots being used to match the vibrance of Lewis' character choices. However, the characters and objects I chose were of a darker, more serious nature, as serious storytelling is one of the reasons I play games at all. I chose sci-fi robots, aliens etc, and high-stauration shots would not match the atmostphere of the images. As such, I used low-saturation, high-contrast, grainy edits to not only create a darker atmoshpere, but also to tie the image together, making the added object seem like part of the same image. Another way I did this was by giving my added objects realistic shadows based on the lighting of each particular photograph. The use of a desaturated, grainy theme also gave the images an ethereal quality; they did not feel quite real, reinforcing their status as a dream, a product of the imagination.

With regards to taking the images themselves, I decided to go on a long walk between the villages of Shoreham and Otford, a walk I often take when I need some air, and a walk that allows my mind to wander. I imagined various scenarios along the walk, and turned the best ones into images.
