Having experimented on a milder level with photography using video games with GTA V, I decided to attempt something arguably more challenging. There are a multitude of gritty, intensely realistic second-world-war games out there, and I thought it would be interesting to see what images I could capture from a 'spectator' view during some of the events of these games, and subsequently edit to resemble real war photography. In order to get the feel right, I would have to investigate some real war photographs, and see how I could replicate their general atmosphere.

The images I found all seemed to have certain things in common. In each photograph, the image was fairly grainy, and the contrast was very high, silhouetting soldiers in certain areas. Needless to say, every image was grayscale, and the shots were often taken at opportune moments by the photographer; i.e. soldiers running past, as this ensured the photographer was not in the crossfire when the combat re-started. I also noticed that most of the photographs contained a lot of smoke, kicked up by the battle, something I aimed to try and capture myself. In my own photographs, I will attempt to capture as authentic an atmosphere as possible within the constraints of a game and photoshop.
