The Invasion

Ever since old fashioned text adventures, storytelling in video games has always been a big thing. Classics such as Zork remain well-known amongst hardcore gamers today, but in recent years gaming has strived to tell more serious stories, with some notable exceptions such as the Saints Row franchise. I decided it would be interesting to take an absolute classic, Space Invaders, and try to create a shoot based around it which told a story. However, by using the original character sprites from the game, I aimed to challenge this seriousness at the same time, arguing that there is a place for fun without a dark and morbid plot; we have seen a satire like this in the film industry recently, with the release of POWER/RANGERS, a satirically dark take on the classic, almost nonsensical children's series. I used black-and-white to make my images seem more gohstly and dark, and by removing the vibrant colours of the classic game I almost removed the joy from the characters and turned them into something evil. The characters were superimposed using several photoshop techniques, such as perspective transformation, the magic wand tool, desaturation and blend modes.
